Andorian Dominoes anyone?

I have no idea if Andorians ever played dominoes, but anyone who knows me even slightly, knows that on occasion, I will make up sh*t. I figured it's better than posting selfies with incriminating evidence in the background.

Pinterest has been a great source of inspiration for soap making and I've been needing that. The soaps on my soap board are absolutely incredible and between that, and Silvia's suggestion for colour combinations, I decided to try something new.

My soap for the week is a combination of pseudo embedding and layering. I wanted something that would punch out an interesting shape so that the second layer could come through to create a contrast. My cookie cutters are all rather large and I thought I'd stick with a simple geometric shape for now. I tried using a BBQ lighter (I think it's now toast) and the lid of a pen, but they didn't have the sharp edge to cut out a proper hole. We have a bunch of straws laying around and so I used that instead. It seems to work alright, and I used the PJ Tool for cleaning up the edges.

Next time, I guess I should measure it out so the holes are more evenly spaced, but I do like the colours. The centre is scented with vanilla sandalwood from Brambleberry, and so the whole theme of this soap, I think, is quite masculine. The colour isn't quite indigo like you had mentioned Silvia, but not a bad complement of colour either I think. Kind of like Neopolitan having a manic day.

What's your favourite colour combinations? Do you waste hours on Pinterest like I do?

    1. I'm glad you can find ways to bug me Teresa, especially if they make you happy. ;) I don't mind the red/purple combination per se, they're just two very strong colours and I find it to be sensory overload.

  2. You are so creative! That is an awesome color combo! Now see, I would never imagine those colors together and yet they work wonderfully. I alway look at colors combos on pinterest because if it were left to me I just use all matching... how boring is that. So yes, I waste A LOT of time on Pinterest and I love every second :D

    1. Thanks Michelle! I really get inspired by what I see on Pinterest. I think it's like the combinations you find in nature, stuff that might not work in other settings somehow just work there. I think you have a good eye for colour, we just have to learn to step out of our safety zones.

Oh it's so easy to lose track of time on Pinterest, but at least you can learn stuff from there, unlike playing Angry Birds or something.

  3. Oh, I forgot. My fav color combo is brown, pink, and teal or brown, pink, and yellow.

  4. Neat soap, Monica! I've seen straws used to make dots in soap before and have been meaning to try it. For color combos, I've always thought blue or purple with black very dramatic.

    1. Thank you Jenny. I'd like something a little stiffer than a straw next time. I'd also cut it shorter so it pokes out the bits of soaps on the other end rather than me trying to squish it out.

Those are great colour combos, like you say, truly dramatic.

  5. I agree with Michelle, your color combo is awesome, Monica!
Pinterest is a great place for inspiration, but I waste the most time going through blogs. I would like to be on Instagram but I am having separation issues with my old faithful Nokia.
For soaps, I can't name just one or two favorite color combinations. I want the whole rainbow and more! :-p
You and my hubby would get along. He is also a Trekkie. Me? I had to google what Andorian meant. :0

    1. Thanks Silvia, like I said, your idea was the catalyst. I have never looked into Instagram, I know a lot of people use it. Does it only work with a camera phone?

You always choose beautiful colours for your soaps and make them all look wonderful. I think making a rainbow soap would be really cool.

I actually had to google Andorian as well because I wanted something not totally obscure but that a Trekkie wouldn't scoff and say, that race would never play dominoes.

  6. Those colours are great, Monica and I really love the design which I have also been meaning to try it ( we all have :). Until then, I will be admiring this beautiful soap.
I love so many colours so it would be difficult to say which combo I like more, but blue is certainly one of my favourite colours!
Oh, yes, Pinterest: I could spend all day long on it: fashion and food are my favourite pins :)

    1. Thank you Nat! Like you say, there are so many different techniques/designs that you see on other people's sites and you think, hey I want to make that! Well maybe when we can stop time and get everything done that we want, right?

Blue is such a great colour, versatile and easily adaptable to so many other colours.

Your pictures on interest are amazing, I'm pretty sure I drooled over most of them. ;)

  7. This color combo is amazing! It is very appealing and I love the domino concept. I try to stay off Pinterest for the fact that I find myself adding to my already very full "want to do" list! :)

    1. Thanks for visiting Andee! I'm quite happy with the colour combo, I just held up various bits of coloured soap next to each other and thought, do these work? Sure, why not. :)

I know exactly what you mean about having a full to do list. If I made all the recipes I pinned, I'd be cooking/baking every day til I'm 95.

  8. I love the way this soap turned out, clever using the straws! I love this color combination too. I think my favorite color combo is black and white, which isn't really a colorful combo, but it is classic nonetheless ;)

  9. Hi! I just wanted to give you an idea about punching holes. I've used a leather punch that I picked up at a craft store to punch holes in m&p soap, and it worked nicely. Hope that might help you!
